In the last 12 months, Lloyds Register has seen the last Type 45 Destroyer delivered to the UK Royal Navy, the first Queen Elizabeth-class carrier launched, a sail training ship for the Omani Navy delivered by Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands, steel cut for the first of the new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Royal Navy and a pair of OPVs delivered to the Colombian Navy by STX in Korea. Bob Simpson, LR's Global Lead for Naval Ships, notes that dealing with naval ships is a core part of Lloyd's Register's marine business. Naval ships present challenges to all involved, he says, as the underlying reasons for using an independent third party for safety assurance are fully comprehended and evolved.
