Australia plans potent agile - and larger -maritime force

Published on 25 February 2016, shortly after the March issue of Warship Technology went to press, the Australian governments Defence White Paper sets out a wide-ranging - and extremely ambitious - plan for the Royal Australian Navy, and for the Australian shipbuilding industry and marine equipment supply chain. The plan set out is not only comprehensive; it also contains surprises, not least that the Australian government intends to build 12 new-generation submarines to replace the Collins-class boats - of which there are six - rather than replace them on a one-for-one basis.
