China's considerable domestic demand for inland and coastal shipping fleet modernisation and expansion, coupled with the advance of national legislation governing exhaust emissions, have spurred the development of a raft of new powering solutions that also offer potential in the wider marine market. Notwithstanding early foreign involvement in a technical consultancy capacity, various four-stroke engine projects that have come to fruition as actual products in recent years, or which are just now reaching the commercial production phase, are essentially the result of domestic endeavours. These initiatives augment the overall offering from the Chinese maritime industries, and underscore increasing technological capabilities and self-reliance in the supply chain feeding the shipbuilding sector, accorded strategic importance in terms of national economic planning.
