HiMSEN brings a home grown edge

Having raised the stakes in one of the most hotly-competitive segments of the engine market by adding a 320mm-bore, medium-speed design to its home-grown HiMSEN range, Hyundai has given new expression to its determination to complement its position as an extremely prolific producer of ships, machinery, and equipment with a growing technological self-reliance. The development of the H32/40 diesel, suited to applications in the 3000kW-4500kW unit power band, was quickly endorsed this year by a debut contract from the newbuild containership sector. The scale of the opening deal is indicative of Hyundai's considerable manufacturing resources and business approach, in that a total of 32 such engines are to be supplied by HHI-EMD within genset aggregates. These have specified for eight 8600TEU boxships ordered by Vancouver-based Seaspan Corp. Each genset will be driven by a six-cylinder model of the new HiMSEN type, turning out 3000kW at a running speed of 720rev/min.
