摘要

In response to Executive Order 13423, which requires that 15 percent of existing DOD buildings meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements by 2015, the U.S. Navy has begun a program to certify the headquarters of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Engineering Service Center (ESC) at Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., at the Silver level of the LEED for Existing Buildings rating system. The LEED categories to be addressed under the program include Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Indoor Air Quality, and Materials and Resources. For instance, under the Water Efficiency category, the NAVFAC team estimates that the headquarters' water usage can be reduced by approximately two-thirds through such practices as low-flush toilets, waterless urinals, sensor-activated faucets, and regular inspection and maintenance of the irrigation system.
