Tunnels form an important part of the transportation network and enable a smooth flow of motorised, pedestrian and other traffic such as cyclists and equestrians in relative safety. When a section of highway is spanned, be it by another highway, the rail network, a building or other such cover, it effectively forms a tunnel.
