Development of Simulating the Visual Acuity of Elder People: Paying Attention to Lowering of Visual Acuity at Short and Middle Distances

This paper describes a study on simulating method for visual acuity of elder people to be experienced by young people (at less than 40). It is clarified, by using a new vision meter that allows measurement of the visual acuity at a desired viewing distance, that the visual acuity of people in their late forties at 70 cm as the speedometer viewing distance is approx. 0.7 and that of people in their fifties is approx. 0.4. The developed simulating method is as follows:(1) For young people, it is effective in simulating the visual acuity of elder people by adjusting glass lenses to the short-sighted visual acuity.(2) For the people at their fifties, it is effective in simulating the visual acuity distribution of the sixties by wearing thin concave lenses.
