Hazlight, the new 'intelligent road stud' (see this month's cover) must surely be one of the most radical and ambitious lighting products launched in recent years — and has already been selected as a star Millennium Product for the Dome by the Design Council. The principle behind this 'cat's eye of the future' sounds fantastic — a 100mm square LED unit, controlled by a microprocessor and powered by a lithium cell, rechargeable via an integral solar panel (see photo bottom right). So far so good — but then the whole thing has to be durable enough to sit in the middle of a motorway for up to six years, while being constantly run over by cars and lorries moving at speed.
