The eight winners of the 2009 National Wetlands Awards were recognized at the 20th Anniversary of the award program in the Cannon House Office Building on May 12 in Washington, D.C. The annual ceremony celebrates individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, innovation, and excellence in wetlands conservation. "I must commend all of today's award recipients for the way that they have taken up this challenge and for their stewardship of our wetlands," said Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who gave the keynote address. "We must protect our natural systems - our wetlands, estuaries, beaches and barrier islands - or we will find our homes, businesses, and public infrastructure along our coast at greater and greater risk."
