摘要

Despite an increase in worldwide economic growth, the failings of global governance are evident in a wide range of declining environmental and social indicators. The planet has seen a rise in flood and drought disasters of 230 and 38 percent respectively between the 1980s and 2000s. The oceans have suffered the full exploitation of 60 percent of fisheries and the over-exploitation of another 30 percent. Meanwhile, 1.3 billion people in the developing world live without basic services, on about a dollar a day. This is where the "resource curse" as seen in the Kiobel case is still evident, where valuable untapped resources often remain below lands in conflict, where they could benefit the local population but often don't. Even in developing economies with strong growth - China is a good example - civil society has protested decreased life expectancy and other ill effects due to air pollution.
