The Manpower survey highlighted that 13 per cent of employers cited a lack of 'hard' or technical skills among engineers as the reason why they cannot find the right talent, with 11 per cent citing a lack of experience and 8 per cent of employers saying candidates lacked knowledge of business/academic disciplines/industry or formal qualifications. Taking the lack of experience out of the equation for the moment, there is evidently an immediate requirement for engineers to upskill in new and emerging technical areas of relevance, balanced with sector know-how. Closing these gaps will improve the chances of job-hunting engineers catching the eye of an employer. However this can only be done by a shared contribution from individuals, businesses, professional bodies and third-level educational institutes. The survey emphasises that engineers should continually re-evaluate their marketability by finding ways to update their skills and by learning how to fulfill the values held by employers.
