Mechanical and Manufacturing division announces lecture series

The Mechanical and Manufacturing division has announced its new series of lectures for autumn winter, 2011/2012. The annual visit from the IMechE President will take place on Friday, November 18. The current President is Professor Roderick A Smith, Royal Academy of Engineering Network Rail Research Professor of Railway Engineering, Imperial College and chair of the Future Railway Research Centre. He was involved in crowd safety research assisting the Health and Safety Executive with investigations into the Hillsborough disaster, and has worked for the Board of British Rail (1992-96) and as an expert witness in many legal cases. The lecture will be followed by a dinner in the President's honour. On December 6, there will be a lecture on the Composite Centre in Limerick. In the new year, there will be a lecture on e-learning for engineers on January 24. The series began on September 27 with a presentation on the provision of satellite and rocket propulsion systems, presented by Martin Houston of AMPAC In-Space Propulsion. Details of further lectures will be posted on the events brief and they will include a presentaton by the IMechE Railway chairman in February and the Paper Prize Competition in May for young mechanical engineers.
