CHANGING FACE OF CONSTRUCTION LAW

It seems likely that at least some of the major projects earmarked for next year may not proceed, while others may not be completed on schedule. This does not mean that a lot of worthy, though perhaps more 'bread and butter' projects will not go ahead or that the news is all bad. A number of contractors are likely to greatly benefit from their ability to meet the requirements of a changing market and, perhaps, the sector as a whole will gain in the longer term from a less adversarial approach to contracting. In the short term, tighter market circumstances are likely to impact significantly on the Irish construction industry, which up until recently was enjoying a very comfortable period. If the State's bold infrastructure plans are to be even partly delivered in the current climate we should expect a significant change in the way projects are procured and managed.
