Most European manufacturers of petrol-driven cars are betting on direct fuel injection to meet more stringent regulations on exhaust gas emissions, expected with the next set of European regulations. But as well as being a front-runner for complying with requirements of the Euro 4 package, due in 2005, this fuel delivery method also uses petrol more efficiently. Direct injection is rare in petrol engines. Only three models are available in Europe, from Mitsubishi, which use its gasoline direct injection system.
