The area of telemedicine within healthcare is defined as the exchange of healthcare information from one site to another, via electronic communications, to improve patients' health. Although typically perceived as part of the medical sector, telemedicine is also appearing within the consumer sectors -the recent Ford heart-sensor car seat announcement is a good example. The concept of telemedicine isn't new; in 1922, a Norwegian hospital set up a radio communication system to conduct medical consultations with sea captains and sick passengers during long journeys. But in today's market, there is excitement and interest in the potential of telemedicine to transform and improve healthcare more widely.
