CFTC To Eye Speculative Position Limits In Energy Markets

Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Gary Gensler announced Tuesday the commission will hold a series of hearings in July and August to consider new measures to reduce excessive speculation across a range of commodity markets, including whether speculative position limits, currently applied to wheat and other finite commodities, should also be applied to energy products like crude oil and natural gas. The CFTC announcement comes as Democrats on Capitol Hill already are moving legislation to establish position limits for speculative traders, tighten federal controls on index traders and swap dealers and strengthen government oversight of lightly-regulated over-the counter markets as well as foreign exchanges.
