NHS's green plan 'needs detailed targets'

The NHS needs to underpin the aspirations set out in its new sustainable health route map for England with detailed targets, says policy thinktank the King's Fund. The new route map, published by the NHS's Sustainable Development Unit (SDU), identifies preventative healthcare and low-carbon technologies as priorities, but includes few short- to medium-term targets alongside its long-term ambitions.1 The NHS is the largest public sector contributor to climate change in Europe. Its carbon footprint of about 21 million tonnes a year is split between building energy (24%), travel (17%) and procurement (59%), and has risen by 40% since 1990.
