The familiar conflict between justice and retribution. The rulers of Pakistan are wont to eliminate their enemies and call it justice. The last military dictator, Zia ul Haq, had the prime minister he deposed, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, executed in 1979 after a dubious trial for murder. Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted as prime minister last month by yet another military coup, also had a mafia don's view of justice. His crusade against corruption turned out to be a vendetta against his political opponents, Bhutto's daughter, Benazir, foremost among them.
