This year has ended on a cliff-hanger reminiscent of a Victorian melodrama. Is it a case of, 'With one bound he was free', the Cameronian Eurosceptics' dream; or is it the 26-country version, 'Gone, gone - and never called me Mother'? Will that funny yesteryear Times headline take on renewed significance: 'Fog in Channel, Continent cut off', or will our separation from New Europe reinforce our older historical aspiration to be world free-traders, untrammelled by the diktats of our dirigiste neighbours?
