The Covid-19 lockdown created a great opportunity for developing my sketchbook. Sketching quickly captures initial ideas that interest me (without the technical element) and help to build up an overall feel for a design. Pen and ink is my preference for its graphic qualities and permanence. Once a mark has been made on the page, it can't be undrawn, in the same way that a building material, once cut, can't be uncut. I begin by outlining forms, then add in the shadows or any basic detail with differing hatching techniques for texture and depth. These simple shapes feed into the identity of our architecture at shedkm - it goes with the idea that every line on a technical drawing has a reason for being there, without superfluous detail.
