June is an important month in the UK architecture calender: architecture school degree shows are taking place all over the country, and a crop of summer pavilions such as Junya Ishigami's Serpentine Pavilion is springing up amid events such as the London Festival of Architecture. Against this backdrop of temporary structures and events, this month's In Practice focuses on exhibition design. The curator has a crucial role creating the theme and narrative of an exhibition but it is often designers who orchestrate it by creating the look and feel of the exhibition space, through deft handling of colour, orientation, spatial organisation, plinths, graphic design and lighting. Pippa Nissen of Nissen Richards Architects discusses the practice's approach, materials and collaborators in its exhibition design, touching on how it has been informed by her experience in theatre.
