摘要

Villages of India have woven durries for generation. Imaginative in design, bold in their use of colour, the durries are treasured items that are laid over the rough string webbing of the charpoi, the traditional Indian bed which is the central item of the furniture in a village house. Rural women in India are strong, self assured and clear-headed; their approach to life is confident and cheerful. These characteristics seem evident in the uncluttered, symmetrical way in which they arrange the designs on their symmetrical way in which they arrange the designs on their durries. Individual motifs are relatively large, which plenty of space around them. No paper graphs are used; the women copy a design from another durrie in the village, maintaining proportion by counting the weft rows and warp threads. Designs are common throughout the area, though names may vary from one district to another.
