Textile and apparel exports from the United States to Asian markets have steadily increased over the past five years, even in the recession ravaged 2009 when total US exports of these products fell 18% to the five-year low of $14,653 million. Figures given in the US International Trade Commission (ITC) publication No.4245 titled Shifts in US Merchandise Trade 2010, which was released last month as the outcome of its investigation No 332-345, show that Asian intake of US textiles and apparel in 2006 was worth $1,080 million, rep- resenting 6% of the $18,088 million worth of textiles and apparel the US exported that year (Table - 1). These exports have since declined to $17,535 million in the following year, $17,805 million the next year and reached the lowest level of $14,653 million in 2009. However, Asian share of them continued to climb — from 6% of the total US shipments in 2006 to 7% in 2007 and 8% and 9%, respectively in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, US exports recovered the 18% fall suffered in the height of recession in 2009 and stood close to the pre-recession level.
