EFFECTS OF NAFTA AND OTHER TRADE POLICIES ON CHINESE AND EAST ASIAN TEXTILE EXPORTS

The North American Free Trade Agreement and the global proliferation of regional trade agreements since the 1990s have complicated China and East Asian countries' trade relationship with the U. S. , as these trade policies discriminate against the non-member countries. Will China and East Asia sustain their competitive position in the U. S. market under dynamic market environments? This paper provides an in-depth examination on the competitive positions of China and East Asian countries in exports of textile goods to the U. S. under such dominant factors as the NAFTA and other trade policies, volatile exchange rates, and China's entry into the WTO. Theoretical perspectives of economic geography and global commodity chains are outlined to predict the future production locations of textile goods across national boundaries.
