Not long ago, telecommunications subscribers expected and received little more than dial tone. All that has changed. Today, customers are demanding an ever-widening array of new capabilities, from display-based call services, to high-speed Internet access, to customized calling features. In fact, J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. reported that the worldwide market for telecommunications services, estimated at US$750 billion annually in 1995, is projected to increase to more than US$1 trillion by the end of the decade.
