PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the processing time in free viewpoint image generation.;SOLUTION: A virtual viewpoint image generation device includes: a viewpoint-dependent initial shape estimation unit which generates a depth map from a virtual viewpoint about an object on the basis of a plurality of images obtained by imaging the object from a plurality of viewpoints; a visibility determination unit which generates, for each of pixels constituting an image obtained by imaging the object from the virtual viewpoint, a visibility determination image representing whether the object can be viewed from each of a plurality of viewpoints or not on the basis of the depth map; a shape optimizing unit which optimizes the depth map on the basis of the visibility determination images so that a degree of color matching is maximized; and an image output unit which, after an improved width of the degree of color matching becomes a preliminarily determined threshold or smaller, generates a virtual point image from the plurality of images on the basis of the optimized depth map and the visibility determination images.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2015,JPO&INPIT
