GPRS - AN INTRODUCTION

The present GSM network works on circuit-switching technology. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) uses packet technology for data transfer. The data speed can be increased upto 171.2 kbps by simultaneous allotment of all the eight channels to a single user. Wide range of value added services like web browsing, e-mail, chat, audio clips, video clips could be provided to the existing GSM subscriber with the upgradation of present GSM network. The acronym GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. In GPRS, information is sent from source to destination in the form of packets. These packets can be sent in different directions to reach the same destination. It is a value-added service to the present GSM mobile subscriber.
