Fixed carriers: 'GSM gateways no remedy for high termination fees'

On the face of it, GSM gateways could eliminate the need for regulation of fixed-to-mobile fees, a positive outcome for fixed operators. But further study shows that using GSM gateways as a solution to high fixed-to-mobile charges is fraught with problems. The UK's spectrum body, the Radiocommunications Agency (RA), is considering whether to legalise the use of GSM gateways in the UK, and third-party GSM gateway providers are growing rapidly in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary and Italy, although few fixed-line operators admit to using them.
