The mayor of Paris has unveiled plans to build what could become Europe's largest municipal broadband network to date. In his New Year's statement earlier this month, Bertrand Delanoe said the city would launch a tender this year for the construction of a fibre-based network covering "all of Paris", offering speeds significantly faster than those currently available from DSL operators. The move mirrors plans divulged last year by the city of Amsterdam, which has already begun to build out a municipal fibre network to 40,000 homes in the first phase of a project that aims to eventually cover the entire city (TM, 15 Nov, 2005).
