A joint venture announced by Dutch incumbent KPN and infrastructure firm Reggefiber last month suggests that the consolidation of municipal-fibre networks is gathering pace. The deal follows several months of consolidation of municipal networks in Sweden by backbone provider IP-Only and a number of acquisitions by French alternative operator Neuf Cegetel (see fig. p. 2). These developments indicate that future networks are more likely to be owned and operated by one large operator, contradicting the view of some observers that future FTTH networks will be fragmented (TM, 26 Sep, 2008).
