EC to probe Europe's digital divide

The European Commission is to step up its efforts to close what it says is the "persistent, and in some cases growing, gap" in broadband take-up between the EU member states.rnCommissioner Viviane Reding this month announced plans to launch a database that incorporates data on social factors such as skills and income as well as on broadband coverage, competition, prices and speeds.rnThe first index will be published in September, alongside an analysis of the policy challenges facing the Commission, and of the future evolution of networks and the Internet in Europe.
