Modern digital technologies offer many opportunities, whose potential has not yet been fully used even in European Union countries for the benefit of its citizens and economic development. Information and communication technologies (ICT) we use in online purchases, payment of bills, in public services over the Internet in their free time for fun and also to educate and communicate with others, whether at work or in private. Effective use of ICT requires the right conditions. European Commission its support ICT development declared in the Europe 2020 strategy and in particular in the Digital Agenda for Europe. The Digital Agenda proposes to better exploit the potential of ICT in order to foster innovation, economic growth and progress. The European Commission supports the development of digital technology, which is different in each country. EU Member States can be divided into three levels in terms of ICT. The European Commission prepared for evaluation of the level of digital readiness of each country new analytical tool - Digital and Social Index (DESI) in the year 2015. This new tool is used to map the level of Internet connection country, digital skills in actions from online purchases through e-banking or internet banking, e-government and e-health. The aim of this article is to highlight the importance of these activities within the EU and refers to the situation in Slovakia, especially in the field of digital literacy, digital skills and in education and training skills in the use ICT also in the program ECDL and New ECDL. It can be stated differences in skills and digital literacy in various population groups in Slovakia, as well as the differences within the EU.
