Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, told FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski by letter that nvoluntary incentive auctions aren't enough to prevent a spectrum crunch. The auctions may nnot raise as much as the $25 billion estimated by Genachowski, and they “will yield only a nfraction” of the 500 MHz sought by the FCC in the National Broadband Plan, she said. Action nshould also be taken on “harmful interference and receiver performance,” Snowe nsaid. Without a comprehensive approach, “we will only partially address the problems that nexist and fall very short in setting the proper path to meet the growing demands being nexperienced in the spectrum ecosystem.”
