STUDY ON TOWNSCAPE OF THE OLD CASTLE TOWN OF HAKOMOTO JUSANCHO IN YAMATOKORIYAMA

Hakomotojusancho, located in Yamatokoriyama, prospered under the preferential treatment system of Toyotomi-no-Hidenaga in 1585. Since it was not attacked in any WWII air raids, the town's layout has not changed much since those days and it remains as it appeared in the late medieval period. In this research, we investigated the factors promoting the preservation and loss of historical townscapes in the various neighborhoods within Hakomotojusancho. Furthermore, we clarified the influence of new buildings on the townscape. We found that the historical and current role of each neighborhood, i.e., industrial, commercial, or residential, affect the likelihood that a historic townscape has been preserved. We also observed that intentional efforts to harmonize new construction with existing traditional architecture have been successful in preserving historic townscapes.
