In first industrial applications, textiles are being used for the reinforcement of concrete structures. For this, alkali resistant glass fibers and carbon fibers as well as aramid fibers and high modulus polyethylene fibers are processed into 2D and 3D textiles. Most emphasis is put on alkali resistant (AR) glass fibers as they are comparatively cheap while having a high tenacity. However, due to the brittle-ness of the glass fibers, the determination of strength is difficult and cannot be tested by standardized yarn testing methods. This article describes a test method which was developed at the In- stitut fuer Textiltechnik (ITA), RWTH Aachen University. This test method is applicable for the testing of un-impreg-nated high-strength fibers for use as concrete reinforcement. The main em-phasis is laid on testing the strength of reinforcement textiles, as the resulting strength of the textiles is an important in- put for the design of these composite materials.
