摘要

The first part of this two-part paper (13) described the development of a new freshman business mathematics (FBM) course at our college. In this paper, we discuss our assessment tool, the business memo, as a venue for students to apply mathematical skills, via mathematical modelling, to realistic business problems. These memos have proven a crucial step in turning our FBM course around from a dreaded course with little connection to students’ intended careers into a course where students experience the power of mathematics for solving problems and informing decisions. Comments from students in the course throughout its 6-year history clearly point to the course's value and importance.

    Kris Green has conducted research in relativity theory as well as the incorporation of writing in mathematics courses. He is the director of the Science Scholars Program at St. John Fisher College and teaches courses in mathematics physics educational technology and freshman composition. Currently he is working on the development of new interdisciplinary program in Mathematical Sciences and Technology Integration. While he holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Arizona his wife Brenda and many others have awarded him an honorary doctoral degree in Star Wars studies.;

    Allen Emerson has been a war gamer an econometrician and a management consultant. He teaches in the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences at St. John Fisher College and has been active in the development of the curriculum for the Mathematical Sciences and Technology Integration major and in uses of educational technology.;
