In Usum Editorum: On some Readings and Conjectures in Vergil

At (1) Ecl. 4. 62 the author emphasizes the difference between the oldest reading (which can be deduced from Quintilian) and the conjecture with which Schrader is to be credited; at (2) Ecl. 6. 16 he takes tantum in the sense of “merely” with delapsa; at (3) Ecl. 6. 24 he proposes viere instead of videri in the wake of Peerlkamp; at (4) Ecl. 6. 74 he adopts ut with R instead of aut; at (5) A. 4. 224 f. he prefers, as his second thought, Tyrias … /res spectat instead of the manuscript reading Tyria … exspectat, and at (6) A. 469-473 he recommends with Courtney and Goold Samuel Allen's Eu(h)iadum instead of Eumenidum, but defends scaenis at 473 (against Goold) in a sense different from the usual one. The author maintains that today's editions do not provide readers - scholars and students alike - with the information they should have. Especially to be regretted is the shortage of information on the most valuable conjectures of the past.
