From 1999 to 2001 a selection of mid-early to late ware and processing potato varieties have been assessed within the main trials network (7 locations) throughout Switzerland. The experiments were conducted by both Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Station RAC-Changins and FAL-Reckenholz. Four varieties have been admitted in the recommended list for potato cultivars in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Naturella, a mid-early ware potato, culinary type B-C, has an excellent late blight resistance. Fontane is a mid-late high yielding variety, with optimal starch content, good storability and excellent processing quality for French fries, crisps and roesti. Innovator, a processing variety for French fries, showed a good resistance to late blight and powdery scab, a high yielding ability on big tubers and stored well. This variety may offer the potential to produce organic potatoes for the processing industry. Lady Claire is an early to mid-early processing potato with high Pommes chips quality due to very low contents of reducing sugars. Its tubers showed a good storability and low susceptibility to damages.
