What They Don't Teach You

Lately my department has hired a large number of new officers. It's been refreshing because all these "baby cops" are enthusiastic, eager to learn, and motivated. In other words, they are the exact opposite of everyone else I work with. All this new blood at our cop shop means I've had opportunities to share the occasional bit of knowledge that was sometimes painfully learned via a couple of decades in law enforcement. These street-corner and parking-lot discussions with the young officers usually fall under the heading of "stuff they didn't teach you at the academy," and I sincerely hope it helps a rookie someday.
