While Guiberneau is not the only author currently preoccupied with the disappearance of friendly, cohesive neighbourhoods, leaving the lonely individual to himself, or to the influence of the mass media, her book goes a step further than others. It describes how an increasing number of individuals are seeking new identities by joining groups, an act of freedom that can, paradoxically, lead to the abandonment of one's own identity (and hence one's freedom) in favour of a collective one.
