This volume offers a timely reminder of how complicated the Sino-US relationship has become. In the United States, the policymaking community seems divided over the future prospects of this relationship. At one extreme are the 'Dragon Slayers', who are convinced of a coming clash between the two sides. At the other, the 'Panda Huggers' are persuaded that the two countries' common interests, especially their economic interests, will eventually lead to more cooperative relations. James Steinberg and Michael E. O'Hanlon, however, present a third argument: the danger of conflict does exist, but could be avoided if the relationship is well managed.
