A New Chapter In An Old Story

Solar thermal has a long tradition in Australia. After experiencing something of a fallow period, new incentive programmes offer hope that another successful chapter in the story of solar is now in progress.rnn July 1941, Cane Growers Quarterly published an article about a solar heating system constructed by a certain Mr. Bates in Meringa Station near Cairns. He had worked out that a 2 m~2 solar collector and a 180 litre storage tank would provide him with hot water 300 days a year. In 1954, over a decade later, the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) published a series of reports describing solar collector construc-rntion in some detail, with an analysis of the system technology involved and the results of field tests. Around the same time, SW Hart & Co became the first Australian company to manufacture solar heating systems, which it marketed under the Solahart brand name.
