Bill George: the era of self-serving leadership is over but global markets pose the next authenticity challenge for leaders

As Harvard Professor, Joseph Badaracco, argues in The Good Struggle: Responsible Leadership in an Unforgiving World,effective leadership today will increasingly revolve around the capacities of intellectual honesty, moral courage and a deep sense of personal identity. He's among a number of respected observers who believe that leaders at the highest level who are focused primarily on CV burnishing and external professional acclaim are likely to become undone by the sudden reversals of fortune in the new Schumpeterian world of commerce. The leaders that are most likely to thrive in these disruptive times, says Professor Badaracco, are those with the intellectual and emotional strength to make "sound but fallible commitments" and the willingness to "take risks, to sacrifice, and to doggedly pursue some larger, higher aim," and who know themselves well enough to "make good" on their deepest core values when "sacrifice is unavoidable."
