Forces during Bar-Passing Events in Low-Consistency Refining: Distributions and Relationships to Specific Edge Load
A piezo-ceramic sensor was used to measure normal and tangential (shear) forces applied to a bar at one location in the refining zone of a Sunds De-fibrator Conflo JC-00 conical refiner over a range of specific edge loads (SEL) from 0.3 to 0.5 J/m. For each bar-passing event, parameters including peak shear force and peak normal force, coefficient of friction and shear work were determined. Distributions were calculated for each parameter. Weibull distributions were found to provide good fits to the data. Median peak shear and normal forces were shown to increase with increasing SEL. Estimates of shear work during a bar-passing event, based on SEL, are within a factor of two of the shear work measured by the sensor.
