WIPP receives shipments of waste from Los Alamos

The Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) has received two shipments of transuranic (TRU) waste from Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory (LANL) after work was completed to get the site ready to prepare and characterize more waste shipments. These two shipments contained waste from LANL’s Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing (RANT) facility, which is operated by the National Nuclear Security Administration and its contractor, Triad. The RANT facility provides space for DOE workers to load 10-drum overpacks, as well as other drums and boxes of TRU waste into shipping containers.
