Citing research by the Kyodo News, the Japan Timesreported August 15 that a survey of utility companies inJapan revealed that about 15,200 tons of spent fuel could bestored in dry metal casks in the future as spent fuel poolsnear capacity. The pool capacity of the 10 nuclear utilities inJapan is about 25,500 tons, and collectively the pools areabout 60% full. Current plans for dry storage among these 10utilities would increase the capacity by 10,000 tons.Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) plans to build adry storage facility at the Fukushima No. 2 complex, whichcurrently is storing 1,650 tons of spent fuel. Kansai ElectricPower Company, which owns 11 reactors, plans to find a siteto store 2,000 tons by 2030.
