On May 21, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) conducteda “tabletop exercise” that focused on key actions needed totransport spent (used) nuclear fuel from a nuclear powerplant site to a consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) undera private shipment model, meaning the Department ofEnergy (DOE) would not be involved in logistics, funding, transport, or storage of the spent fuel. The all-day workshop, which was held at Xcel Energy’s Prairie Island Nuclear GeneratingStation, allowed observers to “gain a better understandingof the used fuel transportation planning and implementationprocesses through observing participant dialogue, information transfer and decision-making on legal, regulatoryand process requirements, as well as stakeholder interests.”
