摘要

BACKGROUND: To assess whether patients who are informed using the CatInfo tool in addition to the face-to-face discussion with the physician are better informed concerning cataract surgery than patients, who only undergo the face to face discussion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this randomized, controlled, triple-masked single center study, 90 patients with bilateral cataract scheduled for cataract surgery were included. Patients were randomly allocated either to the study group (60 patients) or into the control-group (30 patients). Patients in the study group received a self developed interactive computer-based tool (CatInfo) containing detailed information about cataract and its treatment. Patients in the control group watched a short computer presentation of the hospital without any cataract related information. Afterwards a face-to-face informed consent discussion with a masked physician was performed in both groups. At the end both groups received the same validated questionnaire with cataract related questions. RESULTS: Patients in the study-group answered significantly (p 0.05) more questions correctly compared to the control-group (15 versus 12). Furthermore a moderate correlation (r2 = 0,25 in the control-group, r2 = 0,04 in the study group) between age and correctly answered questions was observed. CONCLUSION: Patients in the study group were significantly better informed compared to the patients in the control group. The patients' satisfaction level was high due to the fact that patients were able to go through the programme at their own pace and during their waiting time. Therefore, the CatInfo tool is a very useful tutorial to achieve a better informed consent process for cataract surgery.
