CONSTRUCTION OF UTILITY TUNNELS IN MOSCOW WITH PRESERVATION OF EXISTING BUILDINGS

Selection of one of two tunnel-construction and building-protection methods that vary in principle should, as usual, be implemented on the basis of feasibility comparison of the alternate schemes. The tunnel on Nikol'skaya Street was installed with a simply designed, less expensive shield. In connection with significant deformations of the ground surface above the tunnel, however, a cut-off wall, which made it possible to avoid building deformations, but at the same time, increase the cost of the work, had to be constructed along the entire length of the street. The shield system employed on B. Dmitrovka Street cost appreciably more than the shield used on Nikol'skaya Street. Due to the extremely negligible settlements of the ground surface and buildings, however, costly protective measures could have been eliminated here (cut-off walls, soil stabilization, structural measures, etc.).
