On Martin Luther King, Jr.'s national birthday CEOs of major corporations, university presidents, labor leaders, clergymen, and journalists mount the podium to issue forth flowery speeches extolling the heroic virtues of the assassinated martyr. These speakers identify themselves with King's goals and urge the rest of us to follow their lead in embracing his torch. But what manner of man are they asking us to embrace? Do they know that King is vastly unlike any of the privileged white men honored with a national holiday? Do they know that King died fighting against most of the goals they pursue so tenaciously?
